Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric May Repel Voters

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Recent polling and past elections indicate that voters, on the whole, are looking for immigration solutions — not demonizing rhetoric.

In a National Immigration Forum and Bullfinch Group survey in August, 67% of registered-voter respondents said they’d prefer a candidate who offers immigration solutions, vs. 18% who said they’d prefer a candidate who uses dehumanizing language. The remaining 15% said they were unsure.

Self-identified Republican voters preferred the “solutions” candidate by a 16-point margin.

“Donald Trump and JD Vance’s rhetoric is disappointing, far from what American voters want and might fail them politically,” said Jennie Murray, President and CEO of the National Immigration Forum Action Fund. “In many places, such rhetoric did not bring victory in the 2022 midterms, and recent poll results reinforce voters’ desire for solutions and a more reasonable conversation.

“Most Americans recognize that such rhetoric disrespects the God-given human dignity of human beings and can be dangerous. We need to live up to our principles and values, starting with the sanctity of every human life.”
