Synopsis
After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family returned home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter, Astrid, accidentally opens a portal to the afterlife, and Monica Bellucci shares why filming Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice was an experience for them. Keaton said in March 2014 that this was the only sequel he was interested in. In that sense, I might judge it differently than someone who was a fan of the classics, so keep that in mind. All in all, I had a good time and think the film is a decent sequel to the cult classic.
Tim Burton, of course, brings his own unique style, and this certainly feels like a Tim Burton film in every sense of the word
Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who I’ve been a fan of since watching "Smallville" as a child, they bring their own unique storytelling style to the world of *Beetlejuice* in a film that is very different from its predecessor, but in a fresh way that also respects the original. The visual effects and production design were beautifully crafted, with that classic feel of Burton’s 80s and 90s films, but enhanced with today’s technologies and more extensive options, they were excellent for all parties involved. Michael Keaton, in the iconic role, looks and behaves exactly the same, as if 36 years have not passed since the first film was shot. Winona Ryder, who has become a much more experienced actress than the original film, leads the film proudly and the great Justin Theroux is hilarious in his own unique way.
Another standout performance in the film was Willem Dafoe’s, in an excellent and unconventional comedic role
Jenna Ortega, while giving a good performance, has seemed a bit overexposed to me in recent years, with the feeling that her presence is inescapable everywhere you look. I would love to see her take on a more challenging role that presents a drastically different performance than what she normally does, to live up to the hype. All in all, the cast is full of big names who are always a pleasure to see on screen. Another strength of the film is the musical aspect – something the first film was very famous for.
It’s impossible to ignore the amount of fan service in this film for fans of the classic film – and I mean that in the most positive way possible
From a good selection of songs, especially fun "musical numbers" references to the classics from the first film, and especially a slightly different take on Danny Elfman’s iconic and beautiful musical theme that will delight any fan of the classic film. It’s not the modern, tedious fan service seen in a lot of franchise movies lately, but something that respects the original and gives the fans who’ve been waiting for the sequel what they want, doing it in a logical, enjoyable way that stays true to the spirit of the story and what what cinema should be.
